3. Purpose of the Website and Data Processing

The website Pronunciation Matters serves scientific and educational purposes. The project describes, analyses and presents pronunciation phenomena in the acquisition of different foreign languages, in particular Spanish, English, French and German as a foreign language.

The website contains publicly accessible project and teaching areas as well as protected research areas. The protected research areas are accessible only to authorised users from research and educational institutions after login.

In the public area, no research data of individual participants are published together with names or contact details. Publicly accessible content consists of project information, methodological information, teaching materials and selected short audio excerpts only where separate consent has been given.

4. Research Data and Participant Data

As part of the project, the following data of study participants may be processed in particular:

  • audio recordings of read word lists, sentence lists and texts,
  • audio recordings of short reflection interviews,
  • names and contact details,
  • information on age or year of birth, gender, subjects of study, geographical background and language biography,
  • information on first and family languages, additional languages and stays abroad.

Names and contact details are not published. Research data are processed in pseudonymised form and are made available in the protected research areas only to authorised users.

Public educational use of audio excerpts takes place only if the person concerned has given separate consent for this purpose. Such public use is limited to selected short excerpts from read material. Reflection interviews, spontaneous utterances and biographical data are not made publicly accessible through this use.

5. Access Requests and User Accounts

For access to protected research areas, personal data may be processed, in particular name, institutional email address, institution, role or function, purpose of use and information relating to the processing of the access request.

For registered users, the data required for account management are processed. This concerns personal user accounts as well as group accounts for seminars or comparable teaching and research contexts. Personal user accounts may include name, email address, role, account status and technical administration data. Group accounts do not contain a personal email address and are not assigned to one individual as a personal account.

Data from access requests and user accounts are used exclusively for checking, setting up and managing access to the protected areas.

6. Cookies, Sessions and Authentication

The public areas of the website can generally be used without logging in. Use of the protected research areas requires login.

Technically necessary cookies and comparable storage mechanisms are used to provide the website and to control access. These include in particular:

  • a session cookie for technical session management,
  • a cookie for storing the selected interface language,
  • cookies for login and access control in protected areas,
  • a CSRF protection cookie to secure form and API requests,
  • a local browser setting for the selected appearance of the website.

For logged-in users, a JSON Web Token (JWT) is used as a cookie. It is used exclusively for session management and checking access rights. The access token contains technical information such as user identifier, role, account type and expiry time. The token is time-limited and becomes invalid after expiry or logout.

These cookies and storage mechanisms are not used for marketing purposes.

7. Usage Statistics

The website may use privacy-friendly usage statistics in order to evaluate the use of public pages in aggregated form and to further develop the platform technically and editorially.

Internal aggregated statistics on page views and returning visits may be collected. In addition, GoatCounter may be used in the production environment. GoatCounter is used without tracking cookies. No personal profiling for marketing purposes takes place.

8. Storage and Deletion

Personal data are processed and stored only for as long as this is necessary for the purposes stated above or as required by statutory retention obligations.

Research-related personal data of study participants are deleted no later than after the end of the project, unless another legal basis or consent permits further processing. Withdrawal of consent applies with effect for the future.

9. Rights of Data Subjects

Data subjects have the following rights under the General Data Protection Regulation:

  • right of access to stored data,
  • right to rectification of inaccurate data,
  • right to erasure of personal data,
  • right to restriction of processing,
  • right to notification in connection with rectification, erasure or restriction,
  • right to data portability,
  • right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority.

For questions regarding the processing of personal data, please contact the controller named above or the Data Protection Officer.
